Monica Helms designed the transgender pride flag in 1999 and debuted it publicly at a Pride parade in Phoenix in 2000. Its mirrored arrangement was intentional so the pattern reads correctly whichever way it is flown, a practical design idea that became one of the community's most recognisable symbols.
