Homosexual Tendencies sounds like a doctor from 1954 is taking notes while you are already halfway out the door to a gay bar.
That stale clinical tone is exactly why the phrase is so funny now. Same-gender attraction used to get described through euphemism, diagnosis and suspicious little words like “tendencies,” as if homosexuality were a behavioural symptom that might flare up after dinner. Put the phrase in a bold purple block and suddenly all that old stiffness becomes camp. Maybe the wearer is gay. Maybe bi.
Maybe they simply enjoy the understatement of calling a fully established homosexual life a “tendency.” The humour comes from taking language that once sounded authoritative and making it ridiculous through self-description. The authority changed hands. Good. The old clinical voice can stay in the archive where it belongs, preferably filed somewhere nobody feels obliged to take it seriously again.
Homosexual Tendencies belongs to the part of queer life that laughs, flirts and refuses to make desire tasteful for strangers. Take it to Pride, queer bars, dates, parties or the ordinary day when your so-called tendencies are being particularly consistent. It is a sharp gift for somebody who enjoys old-fashioned wording precisely because it sounds so absurd against modern queer confidence. “Tendencies” implies uncertainty.
The placement across the chest does not. Whatever the wearer is doing, the clinical observation period appears to have concluded.
