A melting pink scoop on a rainbow cone is summer Pride at its most unserious. No manifesto, no glossary, no carefully worded statement. Just sugar, colour and the very gay decision to make the cone itself part of the outfit.

It feels like beach-day queerness, festival queerness, first-date-in-the-sun queerness and the specific happiness of walking somewhere hot with friends while somebody insists the ice cream shop “is literally right there.” The dripping scoop gives the whole thing a little movement, as though the artwork is already losing the fight against July heat.

There is something wonderfully freeing about Pride imagery that does not ask to carry all the history every single time. Sometimes gay joy gets to be dessert, sticky fingers, terrible napkins and somebody ordering the flavour you secretly wanted more.

There is no serious reason to need Gay Ice Cream, which is a very good reason to want it. It is right at home at Pride, beach days, picnics, festivals, boardwalks or the evening ice-cream run that became a group event for no reason. Shorts, denim and sunglasses do most of the work.

It is also a ridiculously easy gift for the friend whose summer personality is eighty percent frozen dessert and twenty percent forgetting sunscreen. The actual cone may melt. The shirt will not. Gayness remains shelf-stable, and the rainbow cone is considerably less likely to drip down your wrist before you find somewhere to sit.
