Rainbow laces are an easy way to make everyday sneakers look like they already have plans for Pride.

Gilbert Baker's first rainbow flags debuted at San Francisco Gay Freedom Day in 1978 with eight colours; the familiar six-stripe version developed later. That history matters, but the best thing about rainbow symbolism is how easily it leaves the flagpole and becomes part of ordinary queer life, from the march to the dance floor to the shoes worn home afterwards.

One polyester pair gives these rainbow gay shoelaces a different construction from the nylon Pride-lace range, with 120 cm, 140 cm and 160 cm lengths available for different lace-up shoes.

Thread them through white trainers for maximum contrast, black boots for a sharper Pride detail, or the festival pair that already knows what 4 a.m. looks like. Small change, very queer shoes.
