Labels Are For Soup Cans is for anyone who has ever been asked to compress a complicated self into one box for somebody else’s convenience.
The slogan is a classic queer pushback against being categorised too aggressively, but it does not need to imply that identity labels are useless. For many people, words like lesbian, gay, bi, trans, nonbinary or asexual provide community, history and the relief of finally recognising yourself. For others, a label can feel restrictive, temporary or simply unnecessary.
The soup-can joke works because it moves the decision back to the person rather than declaring one philosophy universally correct. Cans need labels so you know what is for lunch. Human beings get to decide which words help and which ones do not.
Wear it to Pride, queer meet-ups, campus, a first date or the family gathering where somebody is likely to ask an overly tidy question about who you are. It also makes a thoughtful gift for a questioning, fluid or deliberately unlabeled friend, provided the sentiment matches how they actually talk about themselves. The graphic gives the idea enough humour to keep it from sounding defensive.
Use every label that gives you language, change them when they stop fitting, or refuse them entirely. The point is not to abolish labels. It is to stop pretending anyone else gets to stick one on you.

This Queer In The World Original Design is printed to order, so please allow around 2-5 business days for production before dispatch. Making each piece only after it is ordered helps avoid overproduction and unsold inventory, and orders are fulfilled regionally where possible to reduce unnecessary travel.
