Sappho was an ancient Greek lyric poet from the island of Lesbos whose surviving fragments include desire directed toward women. Much later, her name and island helped give English the words “sapphic” and “lesbian.” The design nods to that afterlife with a classical seated figure, lyre, drapery and Mediterranean detail rather than trying to turn a complicated ancient life into a modern identity card.

That distinction matters. We do not know enough about Sappho to pin a contemporary sexuality label on her with confidence, but her work has become deeply important to generations of women who love women and to queer culture more broadly.
