Heteronormativity Is A Cult uses drag-level exaggeration to mock the rituals that make one kind of relationship look like the compulsory life plan.
The target is heteronormativity, not every heterosexual person. Heteronormativity describes the social assumption that heterosexuality, binary gender roles and a particular path through dating, marriage and family life are the default against which everyone else is measured. Calling it a “cult” is camp satire, deliberately overstating the case to expose how strange those supposedly natural rules can look when you step outside them.
The illustrated drag figure makes that critique theatrical, which feels appropriate for a system already full of costumes, scripts and expectations about who should play which role.
Wear it to Pride, queer theory class, a drag show, a protest or the family gathering where somebody has once again asked when you are going to settle down properly. It also makes a sharp gift for the friend whose humour gets more effective as the sociology becomes less subtle. The shirt is not diagnosing straight people or faith communities.
It is lampooning the pressure to treat one life pattern as universal. You are allowed to choose different relationships, different family structures or no relationship at all without needing to pretend the default was ever neutral.
