Gender Is A Drag takes performance theory, gives it lashes and lets a cartoon queen deliver the argument with considerably better lighting.
The phrase plays with the idea that gender involves repeated social performance: clothes, gestures, expectations, roles and all the tiny rules people are taught to treat as natural. Drag makes those rules visible by exaggerating, rearranging and laughing at them. That does not mean anybody’s gender identity is fake or that trans lives are costumes.
Something can be deeply felt and still exist inside a culture full of performance. The illustrated queen gives the slogan a backstage smirk, keeping the shirt playful enough to wear while leaving room for the bigger idea underneath it.
