Men's see-through shorts solve a fashion problem nobody asked mainstream menswear to address: what if shorts covered your ass while making only a token effort to conceal it?
Mesh and sheer shorts have lived comfortably in queer nightlife for years because they do something ordinary shorts cannot. They create shape without visual weight, turn underwear into part of the outfit, and let skin become a design element rather than something the garment is trying desperately to hide.
They can also be surprisingly wearable. Black mesh over briefs can read sporty from across a room and considerably less sporty when somebody gets closer. Layered mesh works at Pride, circuit parties, clubs, festivals and beaches. More opaque athletic mesh can even move into ordinary streetwear without requiring the general public to learn anything unexpected about you.
The question is not really whether men can wear see-through shorts. Obviously. The useful questions are how transparent they actually are, what you wear underneath, where you can wear them, and how to avoid discovering under supermarket lighting that “slightly sheer” was doing heroic work in the product description.
See-through shorts are shorts made from mesh, net, lace or another sheer fabric that allows some degree of skin or underwear to remain visible through the garment.
Transparency exists on a spectrum. Fine mesh may look almost opaque until stretched or backlit. Open fishnet is visibly transparent in almost any lighting. Layered mesh can reveal shape while obscuring detail.
That difference matters more than the words “see-through” on a product title. Fabric density, colour, stretch, lighting and what you wear underneath all change the result.
Not exactly.
Mesh describes construction: a fabric made with visible openings. Sheer describes how much light passes through a fabric. Transparent describes the visual result when you can see through it.
A mesh fabric can be relatively opaque if the holes are tiny or layers overlap. A sheer fabric can be woven without obvious mesh holes. Retailers use all three terms loosely, so the product images usually tell you more than vocabulary alone.
Because queer nightlife has never been especially interested in the rule that underwear must remain invisible.
Gay clubwear routinely borrows from sportswear, fetishwear and underwear, then removes whichever boundaries seem least useful. Mesh basketball shorts become shorter. Locker-room silhouettes become flirtier. A jockstrap becomes something deliberately visible through the outer layer.
There is also a practical visual trick: mesh gives you the silhouette of shorts without covering the body as heavily as solid fabric. You can be dressed and exposed at the same time, which is basically queer nightlife discovering efficient resource allocation.
Do not judge transparency in one lighting condition.
Dark mesh can appear fairly discreet indoors and become much more revealing with bright light behind it. White mesh can look relatively innocent when dry and dramatically less so under strong lighting or when wet. Stretching the fabric over thighs and glutes opens the knit and can increase transparency.
Try them at home in daylight, overhead lighting and with a light source behind you. Your bedroom mirror has been known to withhold operational information.
Whatever creates the amount of reveal you actually want.
Briefs give coverage while allowing colour and shape to show through. A jockstrap turns the exposed rear into part of the styling. A thong creates a minimal centre line. Compression shorts make sheer athletic shorts more public-friendly. Matching underwear makes the transparency feel deliberate rather than accidental.

Physically, yes. Whether you should in a particular place is a question of venue rules, local law and basic social context.
A private party or adults-only club may have very different expectations from a public Pride festival, beach promenade or coffee shop. Mesh is not a magical legal category that turns visible anatomy into fashion.
If you want the barely-there effect in public, skin-tone or minimal underwear can preserve the illusion without outsourcing your risk assessment to a textile.
Black mesh tends to be the most forgiving because shadows and the fabric colour reduce contrast. It can read as ordinary athletic mesh from a distance while becoming more obviously sheer closer up.

Athletic mesh is usually designed around ventilation and movement. It may have a lining or a denser weave. Clubwear mesh often treats transparency itself as the feature.

Style the rest of the outfit as clothing.
Add an oversized shirt, structured tank, sneakers, boots, cap, jewellery or a proper outer layer. Choose shorts with pockets, a drawstring or athletic detailing. The contrast between sheer fabric and conventional sportswear cues makes the look feel intentional.
Or let them look like underwear. Queer fashion survived.
They can make excellent cover-ups over swim briefs, especially when the fabric is light and quick-drying. But check care instructions and fabric suitability before treating club shorts as swimwear.
Salt, chlorine, sunscreen and repeated soaking can be rough on elastane, prints and finishes. A garment can look aquatic without having trained for the position.
Follow the garment care label. Fine mesh can snag, stretch or distort more easily than solid woven fabric.
A laundry bag is useful for delicate mesh, particularly if the same wash contains zips, hooks or hardware. Avoid rough surfaces and do not assume every synthetic mesh enjoys high heat.
There is no glamour in discovering your favourite club shorts have become an avant-garde fishing net.
Start with a level of transparency you can actually imagine wearing.
For something easier, choose darker mesh with an athletic cut and wear matching briefs underneath. For a more deliberate club look, try open mesh or patterned transparency. So wear the mesh. Layer it cleverly. Check the lighting. Know the venue.
