Then you scroll a little further and suddenly there is a spiked wheel, a glowing tentacle, a cage with an app, something called scrotum bondage and a toy that appears to involve both your prostate and several pieces of your cock at once.

We are not going to clutch pearls at any of it. Queer people have been finding inventive ways to make bodies feel good, surrender control, play with sensation and turn sex into theatre for rather longer than ecommerce has existed. What we will do is explain what the stranger-looking gear actually is, why somebody might want it, how advanced it is, and what you should know before putting anything sharp, tight, inflatable or aggressively tentacled near your favourite anatomy.
A toy can look terrifying and feel relatively mild. Another can look like a tasteful piece of jewellery and make you discover several new opinions about your nipples.
How intense something is depends on the toy, the body, the technique and the person using it. Kink is not a video game where buying the most intimidating object automatically levels you up.
The useful question is not “Is this hardcore?” It is “What sensation or power dynamic does this create, and do I actually want that?”

A Wartenberg wheel is a small wheel covered in points that rolls across the skin. It began as a neurological examination tool used to test sensitivity, then kinksters looked at it and did what kinksters have always done with interesting objects: asked what else it could make somebody feel.

Tentacle toys use curves, ridges, tapers, bumps and other textures that would be difficult for ordinary anatomy to provide. For some people it is purely physical. For others, the fantasy is the entire point: monsters, aliens, creatures, transformation, tentacles, whatever particular Tumblr-to-bedroom pipeline shaped your adult psyche.

The important practical distinction is that shape changes sensation. A tapered toy can become much wider as you take more of it. Ridges and unusual curves can feel more intense than a smooth dildo of the same nominal size. Do not judge a fantasy toy only by its length. Look at maximum girth, texture, usable length and whether the base is appropriate for how you plan to use it.
And for anal use, yes, the flared-base rule still applies. Being shaped like an eldritch sea creature does not exempt a toy from anatomy.
Inflatable toys are one of those ideas that sound bizarre until you understand the advantage.
Instead of inserting the toy at its maximum size, you insert it smaller and then gradually increase its volume using a pump. That gives the wearer much more control over fullness and stretch.

Finally, be honest about experience. “Advanced” should mean you understand the risks and your body's responses, not that you purchased something intimidating and now feel contractually obliged to use it.
Use body-safe toys designed for what you are doing. Clean them according to their material and manufacturer instructions. Use compatible lubricant where appropriate. Anything going in the ass needs a secure flared base or retrieval design. Shared toys can transmit infections, so clean them between users and consider condoms or other barriers where appropriate.
For partnered play, negotiate first. Discuss the activity, limits, intensity, how either person can slow or stop things, and what happens if a toy does not behave as expected. Informed kink is still kink. Knowing what you are doing does not make it less filthy.
And if something causes serious pain, loss of sensation, worrying colour change, heavy bleeding, breathing difficulty or becomes stuck inside the body, stop treating it as part of the scene and get appropriate medical help.
