Labyris, New York City's first feminist bookstore, used The Future Is Female as its slogan in the 1970s, and Liza Cowan photographed her partner Alix Dobkin wearing the shop's shirt in 1975. The phrase was rooted in lesbian-feminist and separatist politics before its later mainstream revival, so the queer lineage is more specific, and more complicated, than modern slogan merch usually admits.
