Heteronormativity Is A Cult is queer theory after three drinks, one bad family dinner and absolutely no remaining patience for being told there is only one “normal” way to build a life.
Grow up. Pair off with the “opposite sex.” Marry. Divide the chores by gender. Produce the approved family. Dress in recognisable ways. Stop asking why any of this gets treated as nature instead of culture. That is the script this phrase is mocking, and calling it a cult is deliberately exaggerated because the pressure itself usually arrives much more politely.
The joke is not that straight relationships are sinister. The joke is how one particular life path got promoted to default while everybody else receives footnotes. Queer people know the exhaustion of having ordinary choices treated as statements. Sometimes the most satisfying response is not another gentle explanation. Sometimes it is hot-pink lettering and a little intellectual aggression.
Heteronormativity Is A Cult earns its place by giving the outfit a point of view. This one belongs at Pride, campus, queer theory nights, art spaces or the dinner where somebody has once again asked when you are settling down in a way they personally understand. This is not gentle ally merch.
It is for the person who enjoys a little intellectual aggression with their pink lettering. You do not have to destroy tradition to be queer. You just get to stop pretending tradition is the only thing that counts as ordinary.
